Since 1997, Golden Gate Opera's Outreach Opera-tunities has brought the experience of professional opera to more than 25,000 at-risk children and students throughout the Bay Area through student performances, free tickets for public performances, and in-school assemblies. As school districts reduce budgets for fine-arts education, GGO's outreach programs increasingly rely on a variety of community financial sponsors, including foundation grants, corporate donations and individual contributions to cover the costs of providing these opportunities.

Tickets to GGO's public performances

Through public and private sponsorships, GGO has been able to provide tickets for in-need families and children to attend our public performances free of charge. GGO has developed relationships with numerous community-based organizations that serve this population, including:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Francisco & the Peninsula
  • Home Away from Homelessness
  • Bayview Opera House of Hunter's Point
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco
  • Raphael House
  • Walden House
  • Friends for Youth
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marin and Napa
  • Parents Without Partners

In-theater student performances of full productions

GGO has partnered with area school districts to bring children from disadvantaged schools to student performances. From 1998-2003, through a contribution from The Mayor of San Francisco's Every Child Can Learn Foundation GGO has been able to underwrite the attendance of 300 San Francisco public school children each year.

GGO has made the commitment to hold at least one student performance of each of our public productions. While demand for tickets from schools frequently exceeds available seats, GGO would add student performances if funding were secured.

In-school opera assemblies and traveling productions

With budgets for fine-arts programs being cut, GGO's in-school performances offer a unique and low cost opportunity for elementary, middle and high school students to be exposed to opera.

This year GGO will offer the colorful fairy tale opera, Hansel and Gretel and the opera gala lecture "How Do You Sing Like That Anyway?" to area schools. In February and March of 2005, GGO presents a complete one-act opera tour of The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, an opera based on the story by Mark Twain. Each of GGO's in-school performances includes advance study materials.
